In what can only be described as “another
major shake-up”, the Isthmian League
scrapped Division 2 and introduced two regionalised
1st Divisions, ‘North’ and ‘South’.
This was not simply a matter of combining
Divisions 1 and 2 and takes a bit of getting
the head round, especially as it involved
the Isthmian and Southern Leagues working
together.
Four Isthmian clubs moved to the Southern
League – Bashley, Brook House, Lymington
& New Milton and Newport (Isle of Wight).
In addition to the Southern league clubs
joining the Premier Division, a further 13
were admitted to the Isthmian League Division
1 – Arlesey Town, Aveley, Chatham Town,
Dartford, Enfield, Enfield Town, Great Wakering
Rovers, Harlow Town, Ilford, Potters Bar
Town, Sittingbourne, Waltham Forest, Wingate
& Finchley and Wivenhoe Town.
Eight new sides joined Isthmian 1, including
Canvey Island, who had dropped down from
the Conference National at their own request.
The others were AFC Hornchurch, AFC Sudbury,
Bury Town, Godalming Town, Horsham YMCA,
Maidstone United, Tilbury and Waltham Abbey.
Thirteen clubs left the Isthmian League in
this sweeping change to the competition –
Banstead Athletic, Camberley Town, Chalfont
St. Peter, Chertsey Town, Clapton, Croydon,
Dorking, Edgware Town, Egham Town, Epsom
& Ewell, Hertford Town, Kingsbury Town
and Wembley.
The hardest part in the compilation of this
page has proved to be tracking the movements
in and out of the regional 1st Divisions. Identifying the promotions via
play-offs has proved the simplest of the
tasks involved, with sorting out which clubs
were relegated having been a little less
straightforward because the information is
not always clear. Where clubs joining the
1st Division sections came from has not been
attempted because the time it is possible
to invest in such a move is not really worth
it. All in all, it’s a ‘best
effort’ given time constraints and
any errors or omissions in the information
are accidental. The picture provided is fairly
sound, but cannot be guaranteed to be 100%
full.
