The Combined Counties League developed out
of the former Surrey Senior League in 1978.
In an effort to widen its catchment area
and stabilise its membership, the organisation
went through a difficult initial period in
which finding a name acceptable to various
authorities proved awkward to say the least.
Having had the titles ‘Home Counties
Football League’, ‘Surrey Senior
Football League’ and ‘Corinthian
Football League’ rejected for one reason
or another, the title ‘Combined Counties
League’ was finally accepted and adopted
in 1979.
From small beginnings the Combined Counties
League grew gradually in size and, by 1983
had stabilised at 16-18 members. A year later
the league joined the non-league pyramid,
which strengthened its status and this was
further secured when the competition became
the first ‘feeder’ to the Isthmian
League. A series of sponsorship agreements
followed as the CCL grew in strength as a
competition. In 2003 an F.A.-backed merger
with the Surrey County Senior League, which
had operated from 1982 to 2003, saw the Combined
Counties League develop into a 2-section,
40-club competition, at Steps 5 and 6 of
the Non-League Pyramid. The stability and
status of the competition helped lead to
a new sponsorship being found in 2005 with
Cherry Red.
Thanks to Russell Kirkwood for pointing out some errors relating to
the names of the ‘Surrey league’
mentioned above and also for providing the
correct versions of these.

Over the next ten years there were a few
changes to the competition, with numbers
increasing slightly, the introduction of
3 points for a win and an experimentation
with a 2-section set-up, which was abandoned
after one season. By the time the 1990s arrived the
league was a fairly stable and well-established
one.

Lion Sports left at the end of the season,
but four clubs joined the competition –
Alton Town, Chobham, Cove and Frimley Green.
It was decided to divide the league into
Eastern and Western sections with 11 clubs
in each. This appears a little odd, as teams
now had only 20 league fixtures each, while
a single division of 22 clubs would have
faced 42 league games, only six
1981-1982
3 points for a win introduced.

*On March 24th, Frimley Green, having played 29 matches,
were forced to resign from the competition.
The club’s final seven fixtures were
all awarded to their opponents. The reasons
for this rather odd turn of events are not
clear, but ‘Green’ were allowed
to rejoin the Combined Counties League for
the 1989-1990 campaign.
Malden Vale left the competition. British
Aerospace (Weybridge) became ‘Weybridge

Chobham, Cove and Weybridge Town all left
at the end of the season. Ashford Town (Middlesex)
and Sandhurst Town were both admitted to
the Combined Counties League.
Between the 1990-1991 campaign and the start
of the 1998-1999 season, 16 clubs joined
the
Combined Counties League, while 12 teams
left. This regular turnover in membership
was also
reflected in the repeated change in the size
of the competition, with the league only
playing
successive seasons with the same number of
clubs once. The eight seasons below saw the
title won by just 3 clubs – Farnham
Town, Peppard and Ashford Town (Middlesex).
On five
occasions, the champions finished well ahead
of the rest, while the team finishing bottom
of
the pile was usually cast well adrift before
the end of the campaign. The Combined Counties
League had only a single division throughout
these years.

No second game between Farnham Town and Southall
was actually completed. It appears that Southall
were unable to raise a team, so the points
(and a win) were awarded to Farnham Town.

Russell Kirkwood of Camberley Town F.C. In 2002 Cranleigh
left the Combined Counties League, which
was joined by AFC Wimbledon, Frimley Green
and North Greenford United.
