In 1987 the London Spartan League became
simply the Spartan League, reviving an old
title for the competition, but for reasons
which remain unclear. For some time all that
was unearthed about the period which followed
was a list of teams involved in the league
... and this proved to be incomplete. A trawl
through the F.C.H.D. website produced a reasonably
full picture, but it was only with the lucky
break of coming across an old Rothmans Yearbook
that things could be filled out a little
more.
The Spartan League had three sections for
the 1987-1988 and 1991-1992 seasons. It seems
likely that the 3 campaigns in between also
saw 3 divisions operating, though it has
only been possible to trace two for each
of these. One or two other problems arose
in preparing the ‘final version’
for the website, the last of these being
the fact that the excellent F.C.H.D. site
includes exactly the same 1991-1992 record
for Brimsdown Rovers and Northwood and credits
both clubs as having been champions for that
season. Fortunately, there are websites for
both clubs and it was possible to establish
that Northwood were the actual Spartan League
winners in 1992. Sometimes you get a ‘bonus’
item and the Northwood F.C. site provided
one of these by having an archive including
the final league table for the campaign.
Using this helped to solve the problem.
I have not tried to detail movements in and
out of the league or changes between divisions.
It has taken enough time to get to this stage!

THE FINAL PHASE 1992-1997
The Spartan League maintained three divisions
in this period. For the 1992-1993 season
50 teams competed and things appeared healthy
enough. By the end of the 1996-1997 campaign
membership had dropped to 33 and seven teams
had pulled out during the past three seasons,
with their records expunged. The 1993-1994
season for Division 1 was left incomplete.
All was not well and the solution which was
found came as no major surprise.
