The Metropolitan & District League was
formed in 1949, though it began as the ‘Home
Counties League’. The original title
was not accepted by the F.A., due to the
fact that a competition of this name already
existed and this problem took some time to
sort out. By the end of the first season,
the league was, however, known as the ‘Metropolitan
& District’. The ‘driving
force’ behind the creation of the new
competition was Dagenham F.C. secretary Dave
Thake, who contacted a number of clubs after
the Daggers’ disappointment at only
being placed in the lower section of the
London League. It took some time to establish
a firm constitution for the league, but 10
sides started the 1949-1950 season.
Over the next few years the Metropolitan
& District League developed into a highly
interesting mix of ‘A’ teams
of professional clubs, reserve sides of prominent
semi-professional clubs and first teams of
other part-time professional and amateur
clubs.

The league continued into the 1960s with
its mix of ‘A’ teams of professional
clubs, reserve teams of ‘bigger’
semi-professional clubs and first teams of
smaller outfits. In 1963 a second section
was introduced and 37 teams played in the
Metropolitan & District League in the
1963-64 season. In 1964 the single section
format was reintroduced, with membership
having dropped back down to 22 teams and
with a season-by-season pattern of withdrawals
left the competition with just 14 clubs for
the 1967-68 campaign. A brief rally saw 16
teams taking part for the following season,
but, with only 12 teams for 1970-1971, the
decision was taken to amalgamate with the
Greater London League in 1971 as the Metropolitan-London
League.
