Non-League soccer has organised and re-organised
itself considerably in recent years, with
major changes and developments taking place
to establish the Non-League Football Pyramid.
In 2004 the leading clubs below Conference
level set up Conference North and Conference
South as Step 2 of the Pyramid. In the ‘South’,
the 22-club section began in August 2004.
For the champions of the South and North
sections, the prize was promotion to the
National Conference, while the sides finishing
2nd to 5th in both sections went into a play-offs system,
with the South winners playing the North
winners to decide the third promotion place.
